Performance fabric specialist WL Gore & Associates has invested in new technologies it says have led its product line into a new evolution stage that goes beyond waterproofness.

Set to launch in autumn 2018, the Gore-Tex Infinium line comprises four product technologies: Thermium footwear; soft-lined shells; insulated garments; and stretch gloves.

They will join the existing Gore-Tex brand but offer "an entirely new class" of apparel, footwear and accessories for those who like to be active but whose top priority is functional clothing.

"The new Gore-Tex Infinium product brand will join the Gore-Tex brand offering consumers new product options," says Christian Langer, global sales and marketing leader, Gore fabrics division. "It could be a favourite pair of shoes that keep your feet comfortably warm and stylish through the winter; yet because the insulation is so thin they don't have the bulky insulation look consumers are accustomed to seeing. Or gloves that provide enhanced tactility, keep fingers warm in winter and let you use a smartphone without taking them off."

The Thermium footwear uses a new technology to create a thin layer of "highly efficient" insulation applied to the area around the toes that allows for "fashionable, comfortable shoes" with a slim silhouette that protects against cold outdoors, and prevents feet from overheating when they transition to indoors.

The soft-lined shell fabrics pair warmth and breathability while offering persistent water repellency. A Gore-Tex membrane on the outer layer of the fabric enables the jacket to remain lightweight and comfortable to wear, with a soft interior and breathable materials.

The range of insulated garments, meanwhile, are equipped with a new technology where the Gore-Tex membrane lies on the outer layer of the garment allowing water to beat on the surface. As a result, the jacket remains very lightweight and extremely comfortable to wear, with "soft and breathable" materials.

And the stretch gloves feature a single seam over the entire finger area and a 3D shape with stretch to provide superior fit. They are also windproof and breathable. Using a new technology, Gore was able to develop gloves that precisely replicate the shape of the hand to create a perfect fit and improve tactility.

The company says it has developed the product technologies using its knowledge of "comfort science" - how the human body reacts in concert with different climate demands – and ongoing laboratory and field research, for specific activities and users.

"While many consumers pursue individual outdoor athletic pursuits, such as backpacking, skiing or other specialised activities, there has been an increase in people wanting to spend more time outside comfortably and protected in more general ways as a part of their daily lives," the company says.

The new line will be available in selected retail stores from next autumn and will feature a white diamond logo on the products.
