The Indian government has launched 21 new textile parks - more than two years after it first approved the scheme and nearly six months after the funds were released.

The move takes the total number of parks sanctioned to 61. Of this, 40 projects were started in the 11th Five Year Plan with the latest 21 projects being implemented in the 12th Five Year Plan. Out of the 40 parks that were approved under the Scheme for Integrated Textile Parks (SITP), 25 are already operational.

The remaining parks are expected to be completed during this financial year. More than 1bn people are expected to be employed with a total investment estimated at INR275.62bn (US$5.08m).

Of the 21 new textile parks, six are in Maharashtra, four in Rajasthan, two each in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu and one each in Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Tripura, Karnataka, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir.
