Organic cotton firm Greensource has introduced a range of organic jeans online and at Wal-Mart and Kmart stores.

The jeans are made from organically grown cotton and processed according to the new Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), which prohibits the use of toxic dyes and finishing agents, including lead and phthalates.

Greensource, one of America's largest suppliers of branded and private label organic cotton apparel, said test quantities of the denim sold successfully last year in stores such as Macy's, Kohl's, Wal-Mart and Kmart.

"It was exciting to make jeans that are not only more environmentally friendly, but also fashion-forward and affordable," said David Basson, president of Greensource.

Greensource will be exhibiting the range at the Magic apparel show in Las Vegas between 17-19 February.

Currently, federal law only pertains to the production of the organic fibre, such as cotton.

However, GOTS was agreed to in 2006 and its logo and guidelines were announced last summer.

All five of Greensource's manufacturing facilities were certified to GOTS by Control Union between 2007 and 2008.
