Mail order clothing firm Cotton Traders has fallen victim to computer hackers who breached security at the company's website and stole customers' credit card details.

In a statement sent to just-style, Cotton Traders said it identified the security issue in January and "immediately brought in industry security experts to resolve the problem."

But the Altrincham-based company said reports that up to 38,000 customers could be a victim of fraud were "widely inaccurate."

Cotton Traders, set up in 1987 by former England rugby union stars Fran Cotton and Steve Smith, said is website now "meets all leading industry security standards."

The company has a database of around 2m customers and supplies 100,000 orders a month.

"Cotton Traders take any security issues very seriously," the company said, adding that it has recently upgraded all security on its website which has been validated by leading industry experts.
