US apparel company Haggar Clothing Co has acquired Canadian women's wear brand Tribal Sportswear from private equity firm Kilmer Capital Fund for an undisclosed sum.

The acquisition, Haggar said, is expected to complement its existing women's business, which already distributes to Canadian customers from department stores Sears and The Bay, and is expected to grow in North America.

Tribal Sportswear is distributed in more than 2,000 specialty stores across North America, and will continue to be based in Montreal. The business will be led by Steven Richman, who will serve as president of the new division and work alongside Haggar Canada Co president Brian Main.

"With Haggar's vast resources, Tribal will be able to leverage and continue building and growing the brand," Richman said.

"Tribal's highly valued boutique customers, the majority of which are in the United States, provide diversification in terms of our channels of distribution," said Haggar Clothing Co CEO, Michael Stitt.

"The talented design and sourcing teams at Tribal's headquarters provide the foundation for meaningful growth of our women's wear business throughout North America."
