Underwear and activewear maker HanesBrands is on track to reach its 2020 benchmarks as it hailed "significant strides" towards its environmental goals during the last year, including reduction in its energy and water usage, and a further reduction in its carbon emissions.

Releasing its 2017 environmental performance data, the company said that, versus 2016, it has reduced its energy use by 6%, carbon dioxide emissions by 15%, and water use by 7%. Hanes also diverted 84% of waste from its company-owned supply chain from landfills.

Hanes – unique in the apparel industry because it owns the significant majority of its manufacturing and supply chain operations - says it is committed to meeting its aggressive 2020 commitments to reduce energy use by 40% (28% in 2017), carbon dioxide emissions by 40% (28% in 2017), and water use by 50% (30% in 2017).

It is also targeting securing at least 40% (33% in 2017) of its energy from renewable sources and diverting 100% of waste in its company-owned supply chain from landfills.

"These across-the-board improvements indicate our strong commitment to create a more efficient and energy-conscious organisation for both the areas where we do business and the larger worldwide community," says Michael Faircloth, group president, global supply chain, information technology and e-commerce for HanesBrands. "We have taken great strides toward our 2020 goals, and we intend to continue pushing to fulfil our promise to create a more environmentally friendly company."

Last month, Hanes revealed it has invested in a number of new textile finishing systems to help achieve its environmental sustainability goals.
