Upmarket department store, Harvey Nichols, looks set to open its first Scottish store in Edinburgh around March next year.

Harvey Nichols, which has revealed that it is opening full-scale stores in Manchester and Birmingham, will be the centrepiece of a new shopping area in St Andrew's Square.

A city council spokesman said the city was trying to create a `Bond Street-style' development and was delighted that the Knightsbridge store was coming to Edinburgh.

The spokesman said: "Edinburgh is one of Europe's fastest-growing cities and we are delighted that Harvey Nichols has chosen the city for its only Scottish store.

"It is a name that will attract other big designer names and will be a major boost to shopping in Edinburgh."

The spokesman said Harvey Nichols will be the first to open, around March 2002, with other stores in `The Walk' as it is referred to, opening by June 2002.
