Retailers selling high-end products look set for a gloomy festive season according to the retail group Melium Sdn Bhd.

Despite reports of healthy sales for December chief executive officer Richard Curtis is not feeling so optimistic.

In an article for the Business Times, he responded to queries about sales of high end products such as Aigner, Boss, Hugo Boss and Liz Clairbone as "not as good as last year."

Last December saw an increase in consumer spending as shoppers saw an upturn in the economic climate.

Although sales in high-end products are growing, it is large scale retailers, such as department store Jaya Jusco, that are enjoying increased spend in packed out stores. Jaya Jusco is predicting that its retail sales for December 2000 would be up by 36 per cent compared with the same period last year, an estimated total of 133m Ringgits ($35m).

At the lower end of the market is all-in-one store Carrefour, which is predicting a Merry Christmas for its sales figures.
