A Swiss consultancy firm has been hired by the Pakistani government to study the competitiveness of local textile industry.

Gherzi International Consultants will carry out a benchmarking study on the cost of doing business in 20 textile products including cotton yarns, fabrics such as denim and towels.

A provisional study comparing Pakistan, India Bangladesh, Indonesia, Egypt and Vietnam has been carried out and meetings are set to take place with textile industrialists in Karachi, Lahore and Faisalabad.

"It was necessary to determine the competitiveness of local textile industry in the changed scenario when quotas have been abolished and all countries are trying to take larger share of global market," an official at the Ministry of Textiles told Asia Pulse.
