Mall-based specialty retailer Hot Topic Inc has narrowed its second quarter loss on higher sales at its Torrid stores.

Net loss in the period to 2 August was $0.4m, or $0.01 per share, compared with a net loss of $1.7m, or $0.04 per share, in the second quarter of last year.

Total quarterly sales increased 3.2% to $166.8m from $161.7m, but same-store sales fell 0.9%.

By division, Hot Topic sales slipped 0.2% to $127.2m,while Torrid sales rose 15.5% to $39.6m. On a same-store basis, Hot Topic was down 0.6% while Torrid fell 2.1%.  

The company, which operates 684 Hot Topic stores and 158 Torrid stores, said it expects third quarter earnings in the range of $0.12 to $0.15 per share based on a low-single digit decline in comparable store sales.

For the fourth quarter, earnings are seen in the range of $0.25 to $0.28 per share on a same store sales decline of low-single digits.
