International Brand Licensing (IBL) has bought the Muscle Athletic sports brand for GBP350,000 (US$653,657).

IBL acquired the brand from Gibraltar-based Herriott Investments. 1973-established Muscle Athletic was a popular gym/beach lifestyle brand in the1970s and 1980s, before becoming dormant through several changes of ownership.

IBL chief executive Tony Hutchinson said: "We are delighted to have acquired the global rights to Muscle Athletic, and very much look forward to resurrecting the brand in key markets around the world.

"We will be developing new men's and ladies' collections of both performance and lifestyle products that will combine today's trends with the retro imagery of the `70s."

IBL plans to expand the brand's distribution base through its existing network as well as through new licensee partners.

IBL's Admiral brand is the sponsor of the England and West Indies cricket teams and also Leeds United Football Club.

IBL has this year signed licensing agreements for Admiral in the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Hungary, Turkey, Australia, New Zealand, Benelux, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
