Fashion retailer Industria de Diseno Textil SA (Inditex) has posted a higher net profit of EUR98.53 million for the first quarter, up from EUR82.1m in the same period a year ago.

Inditex, which operates the Zara retail chain, also reported a hike in sales to EUR1.2 billion for the quarter, up from EUR979m in the previous first quarter.

New store openings and higher comparable store sales were cited for the improved results.

During the quarter, Inditex opened 61 new stores.
