Jason Hargreaves, the son of Matalan founder John Hargreaves, has been appointed managing director of the UK fashion and homewares retailer following the departure of Darren Blackhurst.

The company, which operates 216 stores in the UK, as well as an e-commerce site and 11 overseas franchise stores, said Blackhurst has stepped down from the business to "pursue other opportunities".

Meanwhile Stephen Hill, who has been with Matalan for 12 years, most recently serving as head of finance, has been promoted to chief financial officer.

Matalan last month said it remained cautious in its outlook despite booking a 10.2% increase in full-year earnings. EBITDA reached GBP100.4m (US$157.4m) for the 52 weeks to 23 February, while revenue climbed 0.7% to GBP1.13bn.
