JD Sports has reported a 3 per cent rise in like for like sales for the 22 weeks ended 1st September 2001.

The retailer's total sales have increased by 16 per cent over the same period last year when sales were boosted by the England football team's participation in the Euro 2000 competition.

JD Sports now trades from 153 stores, and opened 14 new stores during the period. A further eight new stores are expected to open during the remainder of the financial year while five smaller stores are earmarked for closure.

In a statement, the board said it remains optimistic that its differentiated offer and formats, together with in-house design capabilities focusing on fashion and style, will continue to contribute to the future success of JD Sports.
