UK department store chain John Lewis has seen its overall festive sales boosted by last minute lingerie purchases, according to a company update.

John Lewis saw sales for the week ending 18 December - a key period for UK retailers - rise by 7.4%. The company has also indicated a 4.3% lift in sales this week, despite heavy snow in the country.
Andrew Murphy, retail director for John Lewis, said: "In particular, last-minute purchases in lingerie, beauty, jewellery and watches have been very popular with male customers, with many taking advantage of advice from our expert Partners to ensure they get the perfect gift."

John Lewis has seen lingerie brands Mimi Holliday Stella McCartneyand Elle Macpherson outperform, rising 25%, 23% and 15% respectively on last year.
For many retailers, recent snowfall in the UK has disrupted traffic to the high street and affected the delivery of pre-Christmas item bought online.

"As expected, some trade has migrated from our online channel to our shops, following the cut off for pre-Christmas deliveries, making for a fantastic atmosphere in our branches across the UK," Murphy added.
