Men's wear retailer JoS A Bank Clothiers Inc reported record earnings for the third quarter of 2004, with good profit and same-store sales increases.

Third-quarter earnings per share rose 20 per cent to $0.24 per share compared with $0.20 per share in the same period of the prior year.

Net income grew to $3.4 million compared with $2.9m in the same period of last year.

Total sales for the third quarter ended 30 October 2004 increased 14.7 per cent to $82.6m compared with $72.0m in the same period in 2003.

Same-store sales increased 0.4 per cent compared with the third quarter of fiscal 2003, while combined catalogue and internet sales increased 18.8 per cent.

For the first nine months of 2004, net income increased 76 per cent to $12.3m compared with $7.0m in the same period of the prior year.

Earnings per share increased 69 per cent in the first nine months of 2004 to $0.86 per share compared with $0.51 per share the same period of the prior year.

Total sales for the nine months ended 30 October 2004 increased 23.1 per cent to $244.6m compared with $198.7m in the same period in 2003.

Comparable store sales increased 7.9 per cent in the nine months ended 30 October 2004, while combined catalogue and internet sales rose 18.5 per cent.
