Leading men's wear retailer JoS A Bank Clothiers Inc has reported higher second-quarter net income, driven by strong sales, product innovations, and new store openings.

Net income for the second quarter of 2005 totalled $5.3 million compared with net income of $3.4m in the same period last year.

For the first half of fiscal 2005, net income increased to $12.1m from $8.7m a year ago.

As previously reported, total sales for the second quarter increased 20.2 per cent to $98.6m from $82.0m last year, while same-store sales rose 4.9 per cent.

Six-month sales increased 20.6 per cent to $195.2m from $161.9m in 2004, while same-store sales grew 4.5 per cent.

Chief executive officer Robert Wildrick said that the company plans to open about 46 more new stores in the US in the second half of 2005, following on from the 14 new stores opened in the first half.

JoS A Bank Clothiers sells its clothing through 291 stores in the US and District of Columbia, a nationwide catalogue, and an e-commerce website.
