Sports clothing maker Kewl International has changed its name to Meg Athletics Corporation as part of a shift from hockey to soccer apparel.

The New York-based company said its new name and new corporate structure "reflect the goal of new management to put the company on a much sounder and faster track for future growth built on a sports apparel focus, with a particular focus on soccer, the world's fastest growing sport."

Harvey Panesar, recently named chairman and CEO of the company, added: "The worsening situation in professional hockey made it clear to us that it was in the best interest of shareholders to take dramatic but necessary steps to ensure the company's future viability and success."

Existing distribution agreements in Europe and India will continue with Meg Athletics.

The change is also expected to open up new opportunities in the US "where we see the interest in soccer continuing to grow exponentially," Panesar said.
