Knitwear manufacturers in Japan are to ask the government to look at stopping oversupply, promoting exports and providing better infrastructure.

They decided not to ask the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry to invoke temporary curbs against knitwear imports as many of them make goods overseas.

According to the manufacturers, only 170 of 1,200 firms applied for curbs on imports. Over 50 per cent of domestic producers have to submit such demands for any action to be taken.

Last year, the supply of knitwear in Japan was 1.3 billion units, of which 1.15 billion were imports.
