Lands' End's Italian website launch is the sixth international e-commerce site that the company has opened for business during the past 12 months. Unveiled to Italian business, technology and fashion media in Milan, the site is written in Italian, denominated in Italian lira and features approximately 1,000 clothing styles for men and women.

Lands' End websites in the UK (www.landsend.co.uk), Germany
(www.landsend.de) and Japan (www.landsend.co.jp) were launched last November. The company launched sites for Ireland
(www.landsend.ie) and France (www.fr.landsend.com) during September and October of this year. All are written in the coutry's national language and denominated in local currency.

"The clothing industry is becoming more and more global," said Sam Taylor, Lands' End international vice president. "Customers from over 185 countries regularly shop with Lands' End, and now we're making our clothing available to them via a localised site in their own language and local currency, to enhance the customer experience. All six of our websites offer high quality, classically-inspired American-styled clothing with world class service and our unconditional guarantee that allows shoppers to return anything at any time and for any reason."

With today's Italian launch, Lands' End offers localised shopping options in five of the top-10 e-commerce markets outside of the US, including the top-four - Japan, Germany, UK and France; Italy is ranked number nine, according to Forrester Research projections for 2004. Landsend.com is ranked the largest seller of apparel online by the US's National Retail Federation and the fifteenth largest site overall in sales.

"Based on research estimates, Italy is the fourth largest clothing market in Europe, behind Germany, UK and France," said Taylor. "While the online clothing market in Italy is in its early stages, we're offering one of the best clothing sites in the country, along with a brand name and unconditional guarantee that consumers can trust for shopping around the world."

For the companies new Internet operations, orders are fulfilled and shipped from the company's European warehouse in Oakham, England, with two to five working day delivery to all locations. Local addresses for customer returns are provided in each country, with customer service in local language provided by sales and service representatives based in England and Germany.

"Due to the attractive economics of the Internet and the scalability of the medium, we're able to reach our customers and new customers in a very cost effective way," said Taylor. "With the Internet in place, our international expansion strategy is to launch new markets via the Internet first, and we may possibly follow up with a catalogue once the business has grown and can justify the investment. To launch six international countries in one year would have been impossible in the physical world of paper catalogs."
