Chinese sportswear firm Li Ning, which shot to fame when its founder headlined the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony last year, is reportedly eyeing a first international retail store in the US.

The company's chief executive told Reuters in an interview that it planned to open a store in Portland, Oregon, next month.

Last week the company opened a dedicated badminton store in Hong Kong.

It said at the time that landing a foothold in Hong Kong constituted an important step of its "global expansion" plans for the brand.

Zhang Zhiyong, CEO of the group, added at the time: "The group believes that badminton, a sport event that is very popular in Hong Kong, will be able to help create association between Li Ning as a sports brand and consumers, paving the way for Li Ning to expand into other overseas markets."

Li Ning could not be immediately reached for further comment.
