The operator of the popular Victoria's Secret lingerie chain, Limited Brands Inc, said on Thursday it more than doubled its second quarter profit from last year and enjoyed a four per cent rise in same-store sales.

The Ohio-based company, which also runs the Express and Bath & Body Works chains, posted net profit of $83.2 million, or 16 cents per diluted share, from an adjusted $34.5m, or seven cents per share, in the year-ago period.

Limited said in a news release that sales climbed to $2.11 billion from an adjusted $1.96bn in 2001 and it expects same-store sales to grow by a mid-single digit percentage in both the third and fourth quarters.

Chairman and CEO, Leslie Wexner, commented: "We are pleased with our second quarter result, which exceeded our initial expectations.

"However, the overall environment remains challenging, and we have a cautious outlook toward the fall season. We will continue our strategy of conservatism and discipline."
