South Africa's single fastest growing online retail category by number of sites is lingerie, according to the results of a survey on retail e-commerce in the country.

The survey, conducted by Arthur Goldstuck for technology research house World Wide Worx, also found that online sales by retailers doubled over the 2001 holiday season compared to the previous year.

In a statement Goldstuck said online sales - excluding property, cars and travel - rose to R40 million between the middle of November and 24 December 2001.

The online retail spend for the whole year came to R162 million he said.

However, the findings also show that online sales accounted for less than 0.1 per cent of South Africa's total retail market of R188 billion for 2001.
