Austrian luxury shoe fashion group Lorenz AG is to set up a new production plant in Bardejov, Slovakia over the next two years. The new plant will create 1,500 new jobs. 

The company is investing 600 million Slovak crowns ($12.5m) in the project, and an undisclosed foreign investor will contribute an additional 200m crowns ($4.2m) for technology and equipment.

The Slovak subsidiary of the Austrian company plans to start production by the end of 2002. Around 75 per cent of its output is likely to be exported.

Manufacture will focus on the Hogl, Ganter and Hassia shoe brands.

With over 1,000 employees in Austria, Germany, Czech Republic, Croatia, Hungary, Italy and India, Lorenz AG manufactures approximately two million pairs of shoes for over 30 sales markets in Europe, Asia and North America.
