Luxury fashion house LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton will shut down its landmark La Samaritaine department store for six years in order to complete repairs, according to sources quoted by the media.

La Samaritaine, which is situated in central Paris, recently failed a police safety inspection, and was initially closed down on 15 June.

The store is predicted to be losing €2 million-€3m per week by being forced to shut, while the necessary repairs are expected to total in excess of €100m.

A works council is due to take place on Friday to negotiate the future of the store's 1,300 employees.
