Michael Spillane, a former executive with the fashion company Tommy Hilfiger USA, has been named president and chief executive officer of Malden Mills Industries Inc.

His appointment ends a nine-month search following the textile maker's emergence from bankruptcy last October.

Spillane, previously president for children's apparel and men's underwear and loungewear at Tommy Hilfiger USA, will work with the board of directors on strategic focuses for the near future.

Immediate priorities will be the recruitment of new senior management, including a chief financial officer.

Spillane has also been tasked with leading the company into new markets, increasing profitability, and expanding of the company's leading position in the development of technically advanced goods.

Richard McCaffery, chairman of the board's management selection committee said: "Malden has been positioning itself for growth on several fronts and Michael has the right skills and experience to lead the company to the next level".

Spillane said he will be looking at new branding, marketing and product development ideas for Polartec Fleece, which Malden Mills makes for customers including Lands' End, The North Face and the Pentagon.
