Performance fabric maker Malden Mills Industries Inc has won a $15m order to supply Polartec garments to the US Military.

The contract, approved by the US Congress and President Bush in the 2006 Defense Spending Bill, includes $1.1m in funding to complete a third year of research and development into electronic textiles that monitor soldier's vital signs remotely.

In addition to electronic textiles, funding in the 2006 Defense Spending Bill will continue into the Army Extended Cold Weather Clothing System, the Marine Corps Mountain Cold Weather Clothing and Equipment Program, and the Navy Air Warfare Center's Multi-Climate Protection System.

All incorporate a range of Polartec fabrics to protect military personnel from severe weather, fire and moisture.

Polartec fabrics are used extensively in all branches of the United States military including the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Special Operations Forces.
