Second quarter losses at women's wear manufacturer Marisa Christina Inc showed a small improvement over the same period, despite lower sales volume the company said Monday.

For the second quarter ended 30 June 2002, net losses were $1.36m, 2 per cent better than the second quarter 2001 net loss of $1.39m. For the first six months of 2002 the net loss was $1.12m compared with a $1.16m net loss in the first half of 2001, a 4 per cent improvement on lower sales volume.

Net sales for the second quarter were $3.3 million compared with $4.9 million in the comparable quarter of 2002, a 33 per cent decrease. The company said this was due to the discontinuation of an unprofitable label and a general downturn in the economy post September 11.

Operating expenses for the second quarter of 2002 were $1.8 million, compared with the second quarter of 2001, when the operating expenses were $2.2 million - a reduction of 17 per cent.
