Marisa Christina, Inc (Nasdaq: MRSA) last week reported results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2000. Net sales for the second quarter of 2000 were $9.2m compared with $10.7m in the comparable quarter of 1999. The second quarter of 1999 net sales include $2.3m from the Adrienne Vittadini division, which was sold September 1999. Excluding sales of the Adrienne Vittadini division, sales grew by 9.8 per cent as the result of a 28.3 per cent increase in sales by the Marisa Christina division. For the first six months of 2000 the sales were $26.8m compared with $25m in the first half of 1999. The first six months of 1999 net sales include $5m from the Adrienne Vittadini division, which was sold September 1999. Excluding sales of the Adrienne Vittadini division, sales grew by 33.7 per cent. During the second quarter of 2000, the company closed twelve of its thirteen Flapdoodles outlet stores and recognized a nonrecurring charge of $1m. Excluding the nonrecurring outlet closing charge of $1m, operating loss for the second quarter of 2000 would have been $2.4m, a decrease of 17 per cent from the same period in 1999. Excluding the nonrecurring outlet closing charge of $1m, operating loss for the first half of 2000 would have been $3m, a decrease of 43 per cent from the first half of 1999. Michael H Lerner, chairman of Marisa Christina, Inc said: "The second quarter increase in sales of 28.3 per cent for the Marisa Christina Apparel division is very important. It is even more significant that this is the second year in a row that our core Marisa Christina business has an increase in this quarter, which historically is our softest quarter. The outlook for the second half of the year is good." Mr. Lerner also commented: "In an effort to refocus our Flapdoodles business into more productive markets, we made the decision to close twelve of our thirteen Flapdoodles outlet stores." For the three and six months ended June 30, 2000 the company reported net losses of $3.4m and $3.9m respectively and per share losses of ($0.44) and ($0.50), respectively. For the three and six months ended June 30, 1999 the company reported net losses of $1.8m and $3.2m respectively and per share losses of ($0.23) and ($0.42), respectively.
