Women's apparel producer and retailer Movie Star Inc has enjoyed a net income increase of 27.3 per cent for the first quarter, with net sales rising 6.6 per from the year-ago period.

The New York-based company reported a net income of $853,000, or five cents a share, for this latest quarter, up on the $670,000 recorded for the same period last year.

Net sales were $16.8 million compared with last year's $15.7m. But it warned in a press release that some of its larger customers were placing spring orders unusually late.

President and CEO Mel Knigin said if those late orders are received, the retailer will face shorter lead times for delivery.

"Fortunately, we have established excellent working relationships with many of our overseas manufacturers and we are confident we will be able to meet the challenge of delivering quality products on time," he added.
