Marks & Spencer is to sponsor the next generation of fashion designers at London Fashion Week, the Daily Telegraph reported

Seventeen young designers will receive financial support to show their collections through the New Generation scheme.

Five have been selected for catwalk shows and the rest for inclusion in the fashion week exhibition. The "Catwalk Five" include Hamish Morrow, Sophia Kokosalaki, Russell Sage, Warren Noronha and Blaak (whose designers are Aaron and Sachiko).

"The designers awarded sponsorship this season demonstrate a high standard of design, innovative cut and style, all of which contribute towards London's reputation for individuality and creativity," says Anne Tyrell, vice-chairman of the British Fashion Council.

The scheme was set up in 1993 to promote young designers. It has helped to launch some of the best-known names in British fashion, including Alexander McQueen and Julien Macdonald.

London Fashion Week, sponsored by VS Sassoon, runs from 17-23 September.
