British high street giant Marks & Spencer has revealed it will hire an extra 20,000 sales staff this Christmas in a bid to help keep customers happy and offer better service.

That number is 3,000 more than usual and reflects the retailer's determination to improve sales this Christmas. The temporary staff will work alongside its 60,000 regular sales people.

Meanwhile, French retailer Galeries Lafayette says it expects to pay between £150 million and £170m for Marks' 19 French stores, but not all that money may go to Marks as it may include investment in the stores.
