National multi-channel direct marketer of women's and men's apparel, Blair Corp, on Tuesday revealed it more than tripled its third quarter earnings on the back of higher sales.

The Pennsylvania-based company posted net income for the quarter ended September 30 of $793,000, or 10 cents per basic and diluted share, compared to net income of $279,000, or three cents per share, in the same period of 2002.

Net sales for period rose to $124.1m from $117.8m.

"We continue to strengthen our balance sheet, maintain liquidity and control inventory levels," said CFO Bryan Flanagan in a statement.

"Blair is increasing strategic efforts to improve profitability and inventory management. For example, the company's significantly enhanced and fully automated fulfillment capabilities will increase efficiency and productivity while reducing operating costs."
