The first bridal wear factory to be approved by the Sri Lankan Board of Investment (BOI) opened in Medawachiya, North Province last week.

The Carlton Garments (Pvt) Ltd factory, a subsidiary of Hong Kong based Maxtel Ltd, was opened by David's Bridal Inc chief executive officer Bob Huth and had BOI chairman Thilan Wijesinghe as guest of honour.

The factory will be used to supply David's Bridal Inc, one of the largest retailers of bridal wear in the US with 155 stores and an estimated retail sales value of US$300m.

The 175m rupees (US$3.8m) investment in the new factory will see around 450 new jobs being created, which will be boosted to around 900 for the second stage of the opening of the factory.
