A US company has utilised the latest nanotechnology to develop what it claims is the world's first nuclear radiation blocking garment.

Radiation Shield Technologies (RST) says its new Demron fabric is a lightweight, non-toxic and lead-free material that is fused between two outer layers and can be manufactured into any garment pattern.

According to a report in Medical Devices & Surgical Technology Week, Demron was originally created to protect surgeons during X-rays.

RST claims its new garment only weighs 15 per cent of traditional, leaded anti-radiation apparel which allows the wearer to move around more quickly and freely.
