GretagMacbeth today announced that Dr Robert McMahan has been named to the newly-created position of vice president R&D. Dr McMahan joins GretagMacbeth through its recent acquisition of McMahan Research Laboratories.

At the same time, GretagMacbeth announced plans to open a state of the art Research & Advanced Products Development Centre in the Research Triangle Park (RTP) of North Carolina, under the direction of Dr McMahan. RTP is the largest research park in the United States, and is home to over 140 high tech firms.

Work at the new GretagMacbeth facility will focus on rapidly translating leading-edge technology and systems research into innovative software and instruments, enhancing its position as a world leader in colour management and colour control systems across a range of industries that includes textiles, plastics, paint, coatings, inks, digital imaging, graphic arts and printing.

Ron Anderson, chairman and CEO, said: "The formation of the RTP Advanced Technologies Centre demonstrates the company's intense focus on developing a world class technology infrastructure. It gives us immediate access to enabling technologies that are critical to our colour measurement, communication and simulation activities. "

Mr Anderson added: "Neighbors like IBM, Cisco, Ericsson and Nortel are there because RTP provides a wealth of talent and technology. Not only does the region feature some of the world's leading universities and research programmes in optical physics, colour science, and communications software, but it is in the heart of the US textile industry, one of our vertical markets."

"The formation of this new R&D facility represents GretagMacbeth's ongoing commitment to developing world class software and instruments as a foundation for delivering high quality single-source colour solutions and technologies to its customers." said Dr McMahan. "It represents a major step in achieving the company's long-term business development objectives."

The facility is scheduled to open in January 2001.
