A new antimicrobial technology said to provide long-lasting freshness and reliable protection against unwanted bacteria that can cause unpleasant odours, decay, rot and discoloration in textile fabrics has been launched by Dow Microbial Control.

The new product, Silvadur, combines silver as the antimicrobial agent with a new polymeric delivery system that delivers silver ions onto fabric surfaces. This means reduced dosages are possible using standard formulations and applications, with the product remaining active through 50 washings or more

"We're confident that Silvadur technology offers game-changing potential for fabric and textile manufacturers, retailers, brand owners and consumers of sports and fitness apparel, socks, intimate apparel and home textiles," said Karel Williams, global strategic marketing manager for Dow Microbial Control.

The products are compatible with both natural and synthetic fibres, and a broad range of common textile chemical additives, detergents and other finishing treatments. They have also been certified by the International Oeko-Tex Association and are registered to meet REACH requirements in the European Union.
