ReVeal is a model for transparency in the calf leather supply chain and includes all production process stages

A group of companies spanning the calf leather supply chain has launched a new model for transparency and traceability across the production stages for leather goods, footwear and garments.

Unveiled yesterday (2 November) to several brands and retailers, the Dutch initiative called ReVeal brings together chemical company Stahl, livestock trading company PALI Group, its calfskin subsidiary Vitelco, and tanneries Rompa Tanneries and Rompa Leder.

The companies say that keeping the full leather production process in the Netherlands offers benefits such as avoiding excessive transportation, fewer processing steps, and no salt is needed to preserve skins. In turn, this reduces the use of chemicals during leather production, and cuts the environmental impact throughout the supply chain.

In addition, the animals are raised on owned farms, where animal welfare and good labour conditions can be guaranteed.

ReVeal enables brands to trace where and under what conditions their leather articles have been produced.

It also addresses certain environmental issues associated with leather processing. Proviera – Probiotics for Leather is a range of probiotic-based products used in the beamhouse step. The technology is 100% biodegradable and based on a 100% natural probiotic formulation, which can then be used to prepare the raw hide for tanning.

Further processing of the calf skin can be performed with Stahl EasyWhite Tan, a chrome-free tanning system for manufacturing high-quality leather which can save water and energy without compromising product quality and usability.
