US sporting goods giant Nike has announced a series of senior leadership changes, including the appointment of chief financial officer (CFO), Andy Campion, as COO. 

Campion, who also serves as executive vice president, will take up his new role on 1 April, succeeding Eric Sprunk who is retiring from Nike. 

He will lead Nike's global technology and digital transformation, sourcing and manufacturing, demand and supply management, distribution and logistics, procurement, sustainability, and workplace design and connectivity. 

Matthew Friend, currently CFO of operating segments and vice president of investor relations, has been named as Nike's new CFO. 

Elsewhere, Heidi O'Neill, president of Nike Direct, will become president of consumer and marketplace on 1 April, succeeding Elliott Hill, who is also retiring from the company.

In her new role, O'Neill will lead the Nike Brand's four geographic operating regions: North America; Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA); Greater China; and Asia Pacific and Latin America (APLA). O'Neill will also lead Nike's global sales and Nike Direct organisations. 

Both Hill and Sprunk will remain with Nike until later this year.

Newly appointed CEO John Donahoe said the leadership changes position Nike for continued growth.

"Heidi and Andy's leadership has been instrumental in both evolving and driving Nike's strategy over the last decade. In their new roles, we will see them have even greater impact on Nike's success in the future. Matthew brings more than ten years of Nike experience to the CFO role and will be a great addition to our executive leadership team."

Earlier this month, Nike announced it is shifting its Nike Brand business in Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Uruguay to strategic distributor partnerships, with its operations in these countries moving to key South American partners. 

The business also recently noted it expects the novel coronavirus outbreak to have a "material impact" on its operations in Greater China in the short term as the company has shuttered half of its stores in the region.
