Nike announced yesterday that it is to support the NikeBhupathi tennis village in Bangalore, which, it is hoped, will produce a few tennis stars over the next few years.

General manager (Southeast Asia) Satyen Patel told the Times of India that Nike will also be looking at sponsoring other sports in India, such as cricket.

Patel also announced that Nike's Indian headquarters are to move to Bangalore. The company's marketing office and its first flagship store will also open there.

Nike is joining hands with tennis coach C G Krishna Bhupathi to transform the latter's five-year-old tennis village into an ultra-modern facility with an investment of Rs 5.5 crore.

The academy, which will be up and running by mid-2002, will have 11 plexipave courts, a multi-functional health club, cafeteria, cyber cafes and Nike stores. It will also house accommodation for students and coaches.
