Sales of sports giant Nike's Presto running shoes are a runaway success on both the UK and America, despite a low key launch.

American retailers say the shoes are selling like hot cakes and the story is the same in the UK.

The shoes were launched without any of the usual high-profile advertising and says Nike's UK PR Manager, Charlie Brooks, their success lies in their versatility.

He said: "They have sold very well with relatively little advertising. There is a cool range of colours and the sizing is also interesting - extra small, small, medium, large and extra large.

" Nike is understood to have roughly quadrupled the number of Prestos it ships per season from a quarter of a million pairs last summer to several million for the season this year.

The shoes come in numerous colour combinations and different styles including a lace slip-on, though some have a plastic web over the middle of the foot.
