A survey undertaken by sector skills council Skillfast UK has revealed that northern apparel and textile industries are going through a period of rejuvenation.

The survey, which encompasses 41,000 companies, found that smaller businesses are growing steadily at the moment.

However, the results also suggested that a shortage of required skills could prevent future growth in the sector.

Skillfast chief executive Linda Florance said the survey showed a positive outlook for the industry, but she added that it also highlights "a concern over skills gaps and staff shortages."

Over half of the north-eastern industry respondents said that their sales had increased in the past year.
