UK high street sales failed to live up to expectations last month although footwear and leather goods stores did brisk business, industry data showed on Wednesday.

Figures from the Confederation of British Industry revealed sales volume balance fell to plus 21 per cent in November compared to plus 25 per cent in October and forecasts of plus 35 per cent.

Alastair Eperon, chairman of the CBI's survey panel, stated: "Although sales growth is steady, nobody expects to break any records this Christmas. The early build-up has been somewhat disappointing."
