Retail information provider The NPD Group has launched a new consumer tracking service for the sports market in Japan.

The service offers data on consumer purchasing, attitudes, and behaviour for sports apparel, athletic footwear, and sports equipment, the company said.

NPD noted that the largest segment of the total sports market industry in Tokyo and Osaka was the active/sports apparel super category, making up 44% of the industry this summer. The second largest category was athletic footwear/sneakers, which made up 35%.
