Around 5,000 workers in the seven National Textile Corporation (NTC) mills in Tamil Nadu state have gone on strike after bonus talks broke down yesterday (12 October).

According to local news reports, the joint action council of the local Textile Mill Workers' Union wants the Diwali bonus to be calculated as a percentage of a worker's total earnings

However management, which claims the mills are not making a profit, says it will only pay the bonus subject to a salary ceiling.

There are 3,500 permanent workers and 1,500 temporary workers in state's seven mills.
