Leading casual apparel chain American Eagle Outfitters Inc on Wednesday posted an expected two per cent dip in October same-store sales.

The Pennsylvania-based operator of around 850 outlets said consolidated same-store sales, which include American Eagle stores and Bluenotes/Thriftys stores in Canada, fell 3.5 per cent last month, with Bluenotes/Thriftys same-store sales down 23.3 per cent.

Total sales for the four weeks to November 3 climbed 6.4 per cent to $104.8 million, a figure which included $5.2m from the Bluenotes/Thriftys operation, down from $6.7m last year.

It added that upbeat performance means third quarter earnings will match or be slightly above the 31 cent to 34 cent range it forecast last month, and said if the recent momentum continues there could be upside to the fourth quarter First Call consensus estimate of 51 cents.
