US federal authorities last month confiscated US$11.4m of fake goods ripping off well-known names such as Nike, according to officials.

The officials cited by Associated Press said counterfeiters were exploiting the run-up to Christmas.

Included in their haul were fake branded handbags worth $9.2m and fake designer shirts, trousers and Nike trainers worth $2.2m which were impounded at ports including New York, Los Angeles, Seattle and Miami.

US authorities said they confiscated more than $93m worth of fake goods in the financial year ended 20 September.
