Pacific Sunwear of California has extended the term of Thomas Kennedy, president of the PacSun division, for one year, until 31 March 2008.

Kennedy joined PacSun in May 2004 in his current post following three years as vice president of global lifestyle apparel at Nike Inc. Prior to that, he spent eight years at Gap Inc.

Kennedy's extension comes at a difficult time for the Anaheim, California-based specialty chain, which for years had enjoyed among the robust sales in the juniors and young men's markets.

For the first ten months of the current fiscal year, however, same-store sales are down 4.8% overall and the PacSun division's are off 4.4%. The Demo division's same-store sales are down 7.3% year-to-date. The PacSun unit's sales were off 2.6% during November.

Overall revenues at Pacific Sunwear are up 2.4% year to date, at US$1.1bn.

Seth Johnson, brought in as Pacific Sunwear's CEO in April 2005, left the post in October and was succeeded on an interim basis by Sally Frame Kasaks, a longtime Pac Sun director. Kasaks is a former executive of Ann Taylor Stores, The Talbots and, like Johnson, Abercrombie & Fitch.
