A buyers forum for Pakistan was established this week following a two-day meeting to promote the sustainability of Pakistan's garment and textile industry.

The buyers meeting, organised by the Government of Netherlands, International Finance Corporation and the International Labour Organisation, concluded with the establishment of a buyers forum for Pakistan.

With an initial membership of 17 brands, the forum is expected to be extended to other major international brands. The initiative is designed to support enhancing access to global markets and increased market share. It is also aimed at promoting advocacy on the nexus between trade and employment and in particular compliance to ILS leading to the realisation of the full benefits of GSP Plus status.

The two-day meeting comprised a series of presentations from the Ministry of Textiles, Ministry of Overseas Pakistani and Human Resource Development and the Ministry of Textiles who provided the policy, legal and regulatory environment of the textile sector as well as Government challenges and progress on coordination, compliance and reporting on the 27 Conventions under GSP Plus.

The Royal Netherlands Embassy also provided insights on the workings of other buyer forum models while the IFC provided information on the Global Trade Supplier Finance Programme that could facilitate the growth of buyers portfolio.
