Same-store sales at discount clothing retailer Peacock Group Plc increased 10 per cent in the first five weeks of the fourth quarter, led by the Bonmarche women’s wear chain which it bought last year.

Same-store gross profit rose 12 per cent in the January period, with Peacock-brand stores rising 11 per cent. Revenue at Bonmarche rose 18 per cent.

Peacock is the UK's third-largest low-cost clothes retailer behind Matalan and Asda's George label, with a 10.3 per cent share of the fast-growing value market.

Finance director Keith Bryant said: “We had a lot of new lines coming in, and we bought new season ranges in earlier than last year.” He added that new spring fashions sold better than expected.
